CHP Officer In Multiple-Vehicle Crash On Highway 580 In San Leandro

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) - A California Highway Patrol Officer was hurt in a crash involving three different vehicles on Interstate 580 in San Leandro Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened near the eastbound I-580 on-ramp from Freedom Avenue and Fairmont Drive. There were already two vehicles pulled to the side when a third vehicle struck the two parked vehicles.

CHP Officer Eric Thomas said the two vehicles were disabled in the Gore Point and that a CHP officer stopped to assist those two vehicles.

That's when another party from the freeway struck the rear parked vehicle causing it to spin and to strike the officer.

The officer involved suffered non-life threatening injuries and was expected to survive.

"The CHP officer was transported to Eden Medical Center," Thomas said. The drivers from the other two vehicles were taken to the same facility as a precautionary measure.

Thomas said it was too early to say what caused the accident, but that lanes 3, 4 and 5 of the expressway would remain shutdown during the investigation, which he said is expected to last two to three hours.
