CHP Cruiser Hits, Kills Pedestrian Near Half Moon Bay

HALF MOON BAY (CBS SF) -- Lanes on Highway 1 near Half Moon Bay were shut down Saturday night, after a California Highway Patrol cruiser struck and killed a pedestrian.

The incident happened just before 8:30 p.m. outside Sam's Chowder House.

The CHP officer radioed in he hit and killed a pedestrian driving north on Highway 1.

"It's one of those calls you never want to get," says Art Montiel, a CHP spokesperson.

The pedestrian was described as a 74-year-old Filipino man from Burlingame.

Restaurant staff said the victim had just finished eating and was trying to leave when he was struck by the patrol car.

Details are still emerging but at 11 p.m., the road was still blocked between Capistrano Road and Coronado Street. Drivers were being advised to use alternate routes.

San Mateo County officials said the road could remain closed for up to 8 hours.
