CHP Arrests 4 Men In Highway 580 Shooting In Castro Valley

CASTRO VALLEY (KCBS) - Four men were arrested Thursday in connection with a shooting on Interstate 580 in Castro Valley that shut down the freeway for almost an hour as the afternoon commute began.

The men were arrested several hours after the shooting by Alameda County Sheriff's deputies investigating a call about a suspicious vehicle, California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Thomas revealed on Friday.

The CHP has not released the names of the suspects.

Five to six shots were fired from a silver car into a black SUV on westbound I-580 between Highway 238 and the 164th Avenue exit around 4 p.m. Thursday.

"Accounts from the witness related that the car drove up next to him and opened fire," Thomas said.

The driver was not hurt.

The CHP shut down the freeway around 4:45 p.m. to look for evidence. Investigators located and recovered one shell casing on the freeway and a stray bullet from the shooting at a house nearby, Thomas said.

Three weapons, including two stolen guns, were recovered during the arrests.

Thomas said investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting.
