Suspect Who Abducted 3-Year-Old From Oakland In Custody; Child Found Safe

EL CERRITO (CBS SF) -- UPDATE: Police Arrest Father for False Report After Carjacking

A suspect who is accused of stealing a vehicle with a 3-year-old child inside of it on Saturday night was arrested in El Cerrito a few hours later after leading officers on a short chase and crashing his vehicle, police said.

According to Cpl. Gil Tang, the suspect was spotted and pursued by authorities around 11:40 p.m., before crashing the vehicle, a silver 2005 Mercedes-Benz sedan, near the intersection of Carlson Boulevard and San Pablo Avenue before midnight.

Tang said the suspect wasn't injured in the crash but his identity still isn't being released. Oakland police took the suspect into custody at the crash scene.

The girl was reported to have been found safe by police at 1:51 a.m. Sunday.

CHP issued an Amber Alert for Alameda, San Francisco and Contra Costa Counties at around 10:00 p.m. Saturday evening.
