Central Coast Woman Survives Mauling From 300-Pound Bear

CARPINTERIA, Santa Barbara County (CBS SF) -- A Santa Barbara County woman walking near her home survived after being mauled by a 300 pound black bear this week.

According to CBS affiliate KCOY-TV in Santa Maria, Emily Miles was walking through her avocado grove in Carpenteria Valley with her dogs around noon on Monday when the bear stood up to attack the woman. Miles said she tried to get away, but the bear caught up and bit her left thigh.

"He took me down. He grabbed me. He sunk his teeth into my thigh and knocked me down," Miles told the TV station.

Miles said she and the bear stared eye to eye, before the animal retreated.

Officials said they have placed traps to find the bear. The woman is taking anti-rabies medication as a precaution.
