Caught On Camera: Pedestrian Hit In East Oakland Intersection

OAKLAND (KPIX) -- The surveillance video is tough to watch but the incident it shows is all-too-common: a hit-and-run collision at the dangerous intersection at Fruitvale and East 17th Street in Oakland.

Night had just fallen on New Year's Day when a car plowed into a pedestrian in the crosswalk, throwing him into a parked car, then into the gutter. The driver barely slowed down before whipping around the corner and speeding off.

Other drivers stopped to help the man, identified as Guillermo Velazquez. He suffered multiple broken bones, including fractured vertebrae.

In an interview with KPIX 5's Andria Borba, Oakland city councilman Noel Gallo said he wants intersections fixed with flashing lights to alert drivers, one of whom sped through the intersection even as Gallo spoke.
