Car Theft Suspect Drives Wrong Way On San Leandro Streets, Wrecks Car
SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) - Police say a Monday night crash in San Leandro occurred after a suspect in a vehicle theft tried to evade capture by driving the wrong way down a road and running a red light.
At 11:57 p.m., a San Leandro police officer attempted to stop a reported stolen vehicle on East 14th Street near 136th Avenue, police said.
The blue 1995 Honda Civic was reported stolen in San Leandro earlier in the day.
Police said the suspect sped away as the officer tried to stop it, and the suspect began driving on the opposite side of the road, forcing the officer to cancel the pursuit.
Police said the suspect, later identified as Alameda resident David Bonino, 30, continued driving north in the southbound lanes of East 14th Street and reached speeds of 50 mph while driving the wrong way in a 35 mph zone.
Police said Bonino ran a red light at the intersection of East 14th Street and Parrott Street and crashed into a 2001 Volvo.
Both Bonino and the driver of the other vehicle were transported to the hospital for injuries suffered in the crash.
