Man Slams Car Into San Francisco Castro Street Business, Flees On Foot

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Officers are investigating a hit-and-run crash in San Francisco after a car slammed into a popular business on Castro Street, police said.

Police said a Mercedes crashed into Cliff's Variety store at 479 Castro St. around 4:20 a.m.

Witnesses told investigators the driver of black Mercedes drove down Castro Street towards 18th Street, crossed over the lanes, struck a stationary cement trash can, drove onto the sidewalk plowing into the business and fled the area on foot.

The outside of the business was damaged in the crash, but no one was seriously injured.

Longtime owner of Cliff's Variety store Martha Aston told KCBS that she received a call from her alarm company that her front door had been breached.

"He came into here and when he stopped moving--as you can see the blood on the sidewalk--he exited the vehicle and took off running," she said.

Aston said that it was fortunate that there weren't any homeless people sleeping in the doorway, as is usual.

Police said it was not yet clear if the Mercedes was stolen.
