Car Plows Through Sidewalk Cafe In Palo Alto; Multiple People Hurt
PALO ALTO (KCBS) -- A car jumped a curb on the 200 block of University Avenue in Palo Alto on Thursday afternoon, with the Palo Alto Police Department indicating that there are multiple injuries, including to the driver.
Police said it happened around 12:30 p.m. near the University Café, located at 271 University Avenue, between Ramona and Bryant streets. Police said it appears the driver drove onto the curb, striking five people who were either walking in the area or sitting at one of the outside tables at the cafe.
All five people struck by the vehicle suffered injuries, one suffering critical injuries. The driver suffered minor injuries. Police said the driver was a man in his 90s and was attempting to parallel park, when he accidentally hit the gas pedal, and jumped the curb.
Police have asked the public to avoid the area if at all possible as they investigate the circumstances of the crash.
