Car Crashes Into Bank In San Francisco's Outer Mission Neighborhood
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- A car crashed into a bank on Mission Street in San Francisco's Outer Mission neighborhood on Tuesday morning, a fire department dispatcher said.
At about 5:54 a.m., a white Mazda drove head on into the front of a Bank of America branch in at 5150 block Mission Street, near Geneva Avenue.
The woman driving the car was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Police said they believe she may have been under the influence at the time of the accident and that she was speeding southbound on Mission.
One of the four decorative mosaic columns made of blue, green and brown tiles in front of the bank was destroyed.
The notable work was was designed and built by Byzantine Mosaics, a San Francisco, in the 1960s.
Police spokesman Albie Esparza said the car jumped onto the curb, just missed a busy bus shelter before crashing into the bank.
Engineers are assessing the structural integrity of the building and are worried about the front end with the columns staying up because of how hard it was hit.
