South Van Ness Crash Into Fire Hydrant Floods Mission Intersection

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A car crash into a fire hydrant in the Mission District Thursday afternoon has left the intersection flooded as crews scrambled to stop the flow of water into the street.

The accident happened at about 1:40 p.m. at the intersection of South Van Ness Avenue and 18th Street when two cars reportedly collided, sending one of the vehicles into the hydrant.

The crash sheered off the hydrant, sending a fountain of water 20-25 feet into the air.

Police and fire units could be seen at the site of the crash in video posted on Twitter by Mission Local.

Instagram user jmstub posted a photo of the spout caused by the accident that showed the water towering above the Whiz Burger Drive-In located at the intersection.

There was no word regarding injuries in the crash.
