Car Buyer Pulls Loaded Handgun At Fairfield Auto Dealership

FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) -- Police arrested a man Thursday after he allegedly displayed a handgun while attempting to purchase a vehicle at a Fairfield auto dealership.

At around 4 p.m., officers responded to a report of a man with a gun at a dealership in the 2800 block of Auto Mall Parkway, according to police.

The caller told dispatchers that a husband and wife were in the middle of buying a vehicle when the man displayed a handgun that was in his waistband, police said.

The caller said the man placed the gun on a desk, however, not in a threatening manner. When officers arrived, they approached the suspect and his wife and immediately detained them inside the dealership, according to police.

Officers removed a loaded .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun from the man's waistband. Officers also found a Springfield .40-caliber handgun inside his backpack.

Additionally, officers located about one gram of a substance suspected to be cocaine inside the man's pants pocket, police said.

Officers arrested the man, identified as Fairfield resident David Philips, 38, on suspicion of possessing two loaded handguns as well as narcotics possession, according to police.

Officers determined Philips was carrying the firearms illegally, as he did not have any credentials to carry a concealed weapon, police said.

Philips' wife was released at the scene, according to police.
