Caltrans Investigates Safety Measures After 'Unexpected' Wrong-Way Driver Wreck On Bay Bridge

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Caltrans officials are looking at ways to possibly enhance safety measures on the Bay Bridge after a wrong-way driver struck several cars last Saturday night. One agency spokesperson says no one really expected that kind of situation to happen.

Several cars were struck and one person suffered major injuries before the CHP caught up with a Vacaville woman who was driving westbound in the eastbound direction of the Bay Bridge. Officers said the woman was high on drugs.

"A situation like that is not totally preventable. She went against the safety measures that we did have in place. The CHP responded as quickly as possible," said Caltrans spokeswoman Leah Robinson Leach. She said the transportation agency is reviewing its safety measures on the span.

"We're certainly looking at the circumstances as to what occurred on Saturday evening, considering what, if at all, could possibly be done to enhance the safety measures we do have in place," she said.

For now, officials said the matter remains under investigation. Robinson-Leach said she won't know what Caltrans may do until the investigation concludes.
