California Elections Officials Brace For Big June Primary Turnout

SACRAMENTO (CBS / AP) -- California's secretary of state is preparing for a major surge in voter turnout for the state's June 7 presidential primary, a day that could prove decisive for both parties.

Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in a statement Tuesday that he has reached out to Gov. Jerry Brown, legislative leaders and county elections officials to make sure the state is able to handle bigger-than usual numbers both in the primaries and the November general election.

Padilla said he wants to make sure there is sufficient staffing and there are plenty of ballots at polling stations.

Other states have seen large turnouts so far, and the U.S. Justice Department is investigating a complaint by the Phoenix's mayor over voters being stuck in line for hours in Arizona's March 22 primary.
