CHP Officer Hit By Car Chasing Speeding Motorist In Oakland
OAKLAND (KCBS) - A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was hit by a car as he pursued a speeding vehicle in Oakland Thursday and has been hospitalized with major injuries, said a CHP spokesman.
The officer had lights and sirens on as he went west through the intersection at West MacArthur Boulevard and Martin Luther King Way, and appears to have been sideswiped by a four-door Nissan sedan that made a left-hand turn into the motorcycle's path, said CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld.
"Our motor unit received major injuries as a result of this collision and was transported to Highland Hospital," Wilkenfeld said, adding that the driver of the Nissan was also hospitalized with minor injuries.
The injured officer has been with the CHP for 17 years, Wilkenfeld said. His name has not been released.
The Nissan driver, whose name has also not been released, was cited for driving without a license, Wilkenfeld said.
The Nissan was traveling in the opposite direction, and may have been trying to make a turn when it hit the officer around 10:10 a.m., Wilkenfeld said.
He estimated the intersection would be closed for several hours for the investigation and advised drivers to avoid the area.
The speeding car that was being chased got away.
