Bay Area Lawmaker Seeks To End Daylight Saving Time In California

SACRAMENTO (KPIX 5) – Daylight saving time could be a thing of the past in California, if a Bay Area lawmaker gets his way.

Assemblymember Kansen Chu (D-San Jose) has introduced AB 2496 (.pdf) a bill that would keep California on Pacific Standard Time year-round.

Chu refers to research that shows negative effects of changing time twice a year, including an increase in workplace accidents. The lawmaker also said there is no evidence daylight saving time reduces energy consumption.

Currently, daylight saving time starts in most parts of the country on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. Hawaii and much of Arizona stay on standard time year-round.

If the bill passes, the measure would ask voters if they want to stay in Pacific Standard Time throughout the year.

California voters approved Daylight Saving Time in 1949.
