California Assembly Committee Tackles Homophobia In Sports

SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) -- Golden State Warriors executive Rick Welts was one of the featured speakers at a state Assembly committee hearing Monday to address homophobia in amateur and professional sports.

The Assembly Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media on Monday held an informational hearing on exploring biases and eliminating discrimination against LGBT athletes.

Welts, the Warriors president and chief operating officer, was the first high-level U.S. sports executive to come out as openly gay and is an advisory board member for You Can Play, an advocacy campaign dedicated to fighting homophobia in sports.

Welts was also among several people honored Monday by the state Legislature as part of its celebration of LGBT Pride Month.
