Cal Student With Measles Unknowingly Exposes Bay Area Residents To Disease
BERKELEY (KCBS) -- UC Berkeley and the city's department of health services have begun contacting people who may have come into contact with a student who's been diagnosed with the measles.
According to the Daily Californian, the unidentified student took BART from Oakland to Berkeley, exposing an unknown amount of Bay Area residents to the disease, after returning on an out-of-state flight on March 30.
The student then reportedly attended classes from April 1 to the 3rd and was then quarantined with a possibly measles-related rash late on the 3rd.
The disease is highly contagious, and spreads through the air, when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
According to the California Department of Public Health, there have been at least 51 cases of measles in California this year—a substantial increase from the four cases reported at this same time last year.
