CA Religious Health Clinics Sue For Right To Withhold Info About Abortion

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A group of Northern California religious health clinics is suing California's Attorney General Kamala Harris over the state's new abortion law.

The suit seeks to block enforcement of AB 775 that goes into effect January 1. It will require health clinics for pregnant women to provide patients with information about contraception and abortion. That information must include phone numbers and referrals to low-cost, and free local and county family planning clinics.

The religious clinics who filed the suit last week are in based in Marysville and Redding and operate as 'crisis pregnancy centers.' They object to abortions and are seeking an injunction against the law on the grounds that it infringes on their 1st Amendment rights to free speech and free exercise of religion.

Governor Brown signed the bill by Assemblyman David Chiu, (D-San Francisco) last Friday. Attorney General Harris has said she will "vigorously defend the state law in court."
