Bystanders Rescue Alameda Officer From Burning Patrol Car

ALAMEDA (CBS SF) -- An injured Alameda police officer was rescued from his burning patrol car by several bystanders after a hit-and-run accident, authorities said.

Alameda police Lt. Hosh Durani said Emmith Delrosario, an Alameda resident, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run following a collision between his vehicle and a patrol car that occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fifth Street and Lincoln Avenue.

Officer Russell Wise was in a patrol vehicle at the intersection when a driver in a speeding vehicle tried to turn and struck the officer's car.

Wise was briefly trapped in the patrol car and the front end of the vehicle caught fire. He was able to escape with the help of bystanders and was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Durani said.

The driver of the other vehicle fled, leaving behind a female passenger in the car. The driver, later identified as Delrosario, was eventually taken into custody and was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

He has since been released from the hospital and booked into Santa Rita Jail, Durani said.
