Building Backyard Housing To Be Easier If Proposed California Laws Pass

SACRAMENTO (KCBS) -- The answer to California's housing crisis might be right in our own backyards - literally.

A number of bills are moving through the State Legislature—aimed at making it easier for homeowners to add small living units to their properties.

Those could be anything from garage conversions to new, freestanding structures.

Governor Brown has already signaled his support for the idea of more so-called "granny flats" or "secondary units".

Currently, local regulations often stymie plans for these units. Things like big fees to connect to water and sewer systems—or requirements for additional parking spaces—make these projects impossible.
