Broken Window At Former Alameda Islamic Center Investigated As Vandalism, Not Hate Crime
ALAMEDA (CBS SF) -- Alameda police said Monday that at this time they're investigating a broken window at a building that formerly housed the Islamic Center of Alameda as an act of vandalism, not a hate crime.
Lt. Jill Ottaviano said the broken window occurred in a building in the 800 block of Santa Clara Avenue, which has been vacant for eight months.
The Islamic Center is now located across the street at 901 Santa Clara Ave.
She said a rock or another hard object was thrown at the window and shattered it.
A crossing guard in the area noticed the broken window when she reported for work at about 6 a.m. on Friday but hadn't noticed anything when she left work at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night, Ottaviano said.
Although the two-story building is now vacant, it still has a sign above the front entrance that says, "Islamic Center of Alameda Community Center," according to Ottaviano.
There wasn't any damage to the building and it doesn't appear that anyone entered it after the window was broken, she said.
There weren't any problems at the building when the Islamic Center was located there, Ottaviano said.
Islamic Center of Alameda officials weren't immediately available for comment Monday.
