Niles Canyon Near Fremont Reopened After Falling Boulders Close Road For 2nd Time

FREMONT (CBS SF) -- Niles Canyon Road, also known as state Highway 84 in unincorporated Alameda County, was closed in both directions for a second time Monday because of falling boulders.

Fremont police said Caltrans was responding with heavy equipment to remove the boulders on the roadway between Fremont and Sunol. There were no injuries or collisions because of the falling boulders, said police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.

The police department tweeted at 4:11 p.m. that the roadway had been reopened. Traffic had been directed to alternate routes Interstate 680 and Mission Boulevard to Interstate highways 238 and 580.

Earlier Monday morning, SR 84 was closed due to a mudslide on the roadway just east of Palomares Road, causing at least one traffic collision.

The California Highway Patrol said the mudslide was first reported around 3:05 a.m. There were no reports of injuries in the traffic collision, and the CHP reported the roadway reopened shortly before 6:30 a.m.

There were reports that airbags deployed for the vehicle that struck rocks and debris on the roadway.

Sunday evening's rain also caused a mudslide that forced Highway 35 to close in both directions - about a half mile north of Castanea Ridge Road.

Road closure signs have been put in place, forcing drivers to turn around. A Caltrans worker told KPIX 5 mud is covering the road and caused part of it to collapse. Our cameras were kept at a distance.

Caltrans estimates repair work will take about one week.
