Bomb Squad Investigation Forces Evacuations In San Jose

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A bomb squad responding to reports of a suspicious device at a storage unit in San Jose Tuesday afternoon has "rendered the device safe," according to police.

Officers initially said they had responded to a burglary at a storage unit in the 1000 block of North Fourth Street, but they have since clarified that the scene was in the 200 block.

On arrival they did find signs of a burglary, but they also found a suspicious device. The department's bomb squad responded and evacuated the immediate area surrounding the scene as a precaution, police said.

Around 5:35 p.m. police reported that the device had been rendered safe.

They did not specify whether it turned out to be a live explosive, or whether it had been detonated. Further details were not immediately available.
