Body Of San Rafael Surfer Washes Ashore At Marin County Beach

MARIN COUNTY (CBS SF) – A body that washed ashore at Rodeo Beach in Marin County Friday morning has been identified as that of San Rafael surfer Daniel Lon Dafoe, who went missing while surfing at Rodeo Cove two days prior.

Shortly before noon on Friday, the Coroner Division of the Marin County Sheriff's Office was notified by the National Park Service that the remains of a deceased man were recovered on the beach.

The National Park Service responded to a 911 call regarding the body at about 11:25 a.m.

Investigators used fingerprint comparison to confirm that the body is that of 40-year-old Dafoe.

Dafoe was surfing with friends when he was found floating unconscious in the water. Two surfers apparently tried to revive him, but a large wave struck them and swept Dafoe into the ocean.

Crews from multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, conducted a search on Thursday, but it was called off after rescuers could not find Dafoe or his surfboard.

The cause and manner of death are under investigation.
