Bill Encouraging Alternative To Expelling Students For Willful Defiance Headed To Gov. Brown's Desk

SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) -- The state Senate has approved legislation that would prevent California schools from expelling students for willfully defying school authorities.

Current law gives school officials discretion to decide what constitutes willful defiance of a supervisor, teacher, administrator or other school employee. But the bill by Assemblyman Roger Dickinson of Sacramento removes the discretion; instead diverting disruptive students to in-school programs intended to help them.

Schools still could expel students for violating school rules or laws. The bill is now headed to Governor Brown.
