Bikers Who Get Tickets Can Take Safety Class For Reduced Fines

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- As the debate over the Bike Yield Law drags on, the governor has signed a law to give bikers a break if they get a ticket for rolling through a stop sign.

As of January 2016, California cyclists who get ticketed will have the option of paying a reduced fine if they go to bike school. Minors will be exempted from the school fees.

Santa Monica Assemblymember Richard Bloom introduced AB 902earlier this year and Governor Brown signed it September 21.

Normally, moving violations on a bicycle carry fines as steep as violations for motorists. Not stopping at a stop sign can cost $200, and running a red light is about $400.
