Big rig crash at Altamont Pass backs up eastbound I-580 traffic
LIVERMORE -- A big-rig crash and fire on I-580 at the Altamont Pass shut down eastbound traffic for hours early Saturday morning.
According to KCBS Traffic, the crash and subsequent fire happened about a half mile past North Flynn Road at around 5:30 a.m. Saturday.
CHP confirmed that the driver escaped from the cab of the big rig when it caught fire after the crash. Authorities were recommending drivers use Altamont Pass Road as an alternate but it quickly became snarled with traffic.
The right lane reopened at around 9:45 a.m. but there was no estimate for when the road would be fully reopened and eastbound traffic over the Altamont Pass was still bumper-to-bumper at 1 p.m.
There were no injuries reported in the crash.
