Bicyclist Fatally Struck By San Francisco Police Car

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) – A bicyclist was killed after being struck by a San Francisco Police Department car near John McLaren Park late Friday night.

The collision occurred around 9 p.m. on Persia Avenue at a bend in the road near Sunnydale Avenue, San Francisco police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

The scene of the crash was very dark, and officers had to bring in lights from the Fire Department to investigate.

Esparza said it was unclear Friday night if the patrol vehicle collided with the bicyclist or if the bicyclist hit the vehicle.

"They were just driving regular, no lights or sirens, not going to a call, just regular, routine driving approaching this intersection," Officer Esparza said.

Following the collision, the officers stopped and called for an ambulance, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities did not release the identity of the cyclist.

The department will conduct an administrative process that will include a toxicology sample for the driver, Esparza said.

The officers involved in the collision were not hurt.
