Bicycle Theft Ring Leader Arrested In Kentfield

MARIN COUNTY (CBS SF) -- A Kentfield woman has been arrested for allegedly buying stolen bicycles as part of a bicycle theft ring in Marin County.

Rebecca Hammett, 50, was arrested at 5 p.m. Tuesday after search warrants were served in the 1000 block of Sir Francis Drake Blvd in Kentfield, at a storage facility on Industrial Way in Greenbrae and at a motor home in Corte Madera, Marin County sheriff's Lt. Jamie Scardina said.

Over 130 bicycles, including high-end mountain and road bikes, and bicycle frames were recovered during the searches, Scardina said.

Hammett was allegedly buying the bicycles from bicycle thieves in Marin County, Scardina said.

A bicycle that was stolen earlier this month from a Sir Francis Drake High School student was recovered because the victim gave law enforcement its serial number, Scardina said.

Sheriff's investigators will process and investigate each of the recovered bicycles for identification and return them to the owner if possible, Scardina said. Photos of the bicycles will be posted on line in the near future, Scardina said.

Hammett was booked in the Marin County jail under $30,999 bail for receiving stolen property. She listed her occupation as "bike builder."
