Best Indoor Pools In The South Bay

Indoor pools throughout the South Bay are connected to aquatic teaching programs for all age groups, some beginning at two months of age. Due to generally warm and sunny days during many months of the year, outdoor pools are commonly found as well. Membership is required, including at the non-profit YMCA community centers.

Popular with both families and singles, OFJCC membership is open to everyone, and tours of the facilities are available for prospective members on request. As one part of a state-of-the-art fitness center, the indoor pool opens at 5 a.m. on weekdays, 7 a.m. on weekends, and remains open until 10 p.m. on Monday through Thursday evenings, closing between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Friday through Sunday. A heated indoor kids' pool has a big slide and other bright and fun water features. A busy schedule for aqua fitness, fundamentals and group sessions takes place throughout the day.

This is the original YMCA of Santa Clara County, a non-profit organization. Parent-child swimming lessons in the indoor pool, heated to 84-85 degrees, begin from the age of six months. A kid's club is available for children of members who come and utilize the facility. Silicon Valley YMCA membership unlocks 12 locations, six of which have indoor pools: Cupertino, Redwood City, Palo Alto, Saratoga, Central and East Valley-San Jose. A Bay Area YMCA membership provides access to 30 locations and reciprocal membership beyond the area.

The AVAC Swim School has been operating since 1964. With an indoor pool heated year-round to 89 degrees and a wide range of classes for ages eight weeks and up, AVAC is popular with families. Babies swim with parents, and boys and girls over the age of three can attend small weekly classes with a 4-to-1 student to teacher ratio, advancing through the skill leagues through pre-competitive. The Swim School offers water safety certification, private lessons and birthday party rental. The club is membership-based.

Sunnyvale Swim Complex is located at Fremont High School with an aquatics program run as part of a joint-use facility between the City of Sunnyvale and the school district. An Olympic size pool has diving boards at one meter and three meters. Children can be registered for swimming classes from the age of three months right up through shark and pre-competitive levels. Water polo, springboard diving, lifeguard training, free form and lap swimming is available for adults. Swimming and stroke lessons have a drop-in program for adults and high school students ages 16-plus.

Two indoor pools heated to 90 degrees are at the heart of the Swim School, operating since 1996. Infants from three months, children and adults can take swimming lessons with a focus on learning to swim properly as the perfect low-impact aerobic activity for a lifetime. Adults can take instruction from novice to advanced freestyle, working on flip turns or any particular strokes. Group classes have a student to instructor ratio of 4-to-1. The Competitive Team at DACA is internationally known for producing top level swimmers.
