'Best Global Universities' Are Right In Bay Area's Backyard

BERKELEY (CBS) - Do you want your kids to attend one of the world's most prestigious universities? They won't have to go far, according to the latest 'Best Global Universities Ranking' from U.S. News and World Report.

The World's best public school - U.C. Berkeley - is also the world's third best University, according to the study. Unlike any football season in recent memory, the Bears were able to edge out number four Stanford, which finished one spot ahead of Oxford in the rankings released Tuesday.

The most important factors in the ranking were global research reputation, regional reputation and quality of publications. Those were followed by weight and rate of citations, level of international collaboration and number of Ph.D.s awarded.

Based on those findings, Boston is actually the center of the academic universe, boasting both the number one University (Harvard) as well as the runner-up (MIT).

Fear not though Californians, even those of us who can't get into Cal and Stanford have very strong options. The following California schools also made the top 100:

Cal Tech (number 7)

UCLA (8)

UC San Diego (18)

UCSF (22)

UC Davis (37)

USC (50)

UC Santa Cruz (63)

UC Irvine (66)
