Berkeley's Pathways Program Includes Guarantees Of Higher Education For Students With C Averages

BERKELEY (KCBS)— The City of Berkeley and Berkeley City College are joining forces as part of an ongoing effort to insure students have a pathway to college.

Pathways-to-Four-Year Universities is a multi-party initiative between Bay Area community colleges and UC Berkeley's Center for Educational Partnerships.

Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates said the program is unique and guarantees astute college education. As an example, he said that the first step is to graduate from Berkeley High with a 'C' average, which would then guarantee that student entry to Berkeley City College.

"Then if you continue to do about a 'C' average at City College you will then be absolutely guaranteed to go to one of the CSU (California State Universities) including University of San Francisco, Cal State Hayward, Long Beach. You name it. Bates said.

Another part of the program includes ambassadors who work with the city's middle and high school students to get them college and career ready.

Bates said the Pathways program has a component that caters to students who wish to pursue a trade as opposed to attending college.
