Berkeley Student Arrested, Another Hospitalized After Police Respond To Massive Brawl Near High School

BERKELEY (KCBS) -- A Berkeley High School student has been hospitalized and another is under arrest after a fight on Thursday near campus.

School officials said Berkeley police responded to the 2200 block of Shattuck Avenue and discovered the first of two incidents.

Interim Principal Kristin Glenchur said the first incident had a crowd of about 200 students.

"After school, and it was a final-exam day so our school let out at 12:40, so approximately 1:05 p.m. we had a group of kids gathering in the street outside on Milvia and Kittredge," she said.

Glenchur said an adult in that crowd had reported that a student had a gun and that police were called.

"In that incident no blows were exchanged, no actual physical fighting occurred," she said.

The principal said the crowd then dispersed, but about an hour later another incident in the form of a fight broke out on Shattuck Avenue involving about 10 people. Two students were hurt with one being taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but was released hours later.

"I think these incidents are very unfortunate. They really are. We very much wish these things wouldn't happen on or around a campus. Of course we wish they wouldn't occur at all anywhere," she said.

It's unclear if the incidents were related. A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of battery. Glenshur said in addition to the arrests, other students involved were removed from campus pending further investigation.
