Beef Company Says Coarse Salt, Not Glass Pieces Found In Meat; Oakley Couple Stands By Story

OAKLEY (CBS SF) -- The Harris Ranch Beef Company has responded after an Oakley couple reported finding small pieces of glass in their meatloaf, saying it was coarse salt.

The beef company says initial testing reveals it was coarse ground salt, and not glass pieces.

The meat is being sent to a lab for further testing.

The couple who reported it is standing by their story.

The husband says the pieces were sharp enough to cut his finger.

Harris Ranch also reports it does not allow any glass inside its packing facility.

UPDATE: Independent testing later confirmed the crystals were a type of coarse salt that dissolved in water similar to the large salt crystals used in the freezing process for making homemade ice cream. Harris Ranch reports the material was added to the meat after it left their plant, otherwise it would have dissolved.
