SF Start-Up Creates Portable Navigation Device To Eliminate Distracted Driving
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A Bay Area start-up is offering a way to eliminate distracted driving while enabling access to technology.
A portable device called Navdy displays an image to a small glass screen with all the tools a driver might use, like texting, phone calls and GPS programming.
With some special optical ticks, the driver's eye sees the display out over the car's hood.
The question remains whether this feature could create another distraction, even though it's controlled by simple hand gestures.
"The image is actually focused out in the distance," said Navdy CEO Doug Simpson. "So when you view information, your eyes stay focused on the road."
Current law says all devices like GPS and smartphones should be in the driver's direct line of sight.
The company has funding and hopes to start shipping early next year.
