Bay Area Satellite Imaging Firm Helping Search For Missing Malaysian Airlines Plane

MOUNTAIN VIEW (CBS SF) -- A Bay Area firm specializing in providing high-definition satellite images is helping in the search for debris of the Malaysia Airlines flight which is now believed to have crashed into a remote part of the Indian Ocean.

Mountain View-based Skybox Imaging makes small satellites that can provides both still images and video with enough resolution to see individual cars traveling on a road.

During the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, a Skybox satellite took a number of photos and video in the Indian Ocean and of the search area between Kuala Lumpur and Ho Chi Minh City, according to the firm.

Skybox Imaging's dorm room-sized SkySat-1 micro-satellite is marketed to businesses to monitor their assets and interests across the globe.

The company has plans to build and launch a network of 24 satellites to cover virtually every part of the earth.
