Bay Area Man Reunited With Dad's Urn, 8 Years After It Goes Missing

PORTLAND, Oregon (CBS SF) – A Bay Area man is finally able to lay his dad to rest. He was able to recover the urn containing his father's ashes, eight years after it went missing.

Earl Johnson III was reunited the urn of his father, Earl Johnson Jr., in Portland, Oregon.

"It's amazing, it really is and I'm speechless because this was a chapter that was lost and finally we got him back," Johnson said.

Kate Justice has been trying to solve the mystery for a long time. It's unclear how the urn ended up in Oregon, but she founded after unpacking during a move to her mother's home in South Dakota.

"I contacted the moving company obviously right away, sent pictures of the urn along with it. Never a peep back from them, not a thing," Justice said.

Her mother held onto the urn after Justice moved back to Portland.

Documents inside the box had an address in Maryland. Justice was able to find Johnson after she emailed TV stations in Washington, DC about the urn. A station aired a report, which one of Johnson's East Coast relatives saw.

After a couple weeks of planning, the reunion took place this week.
