Bay Area DMV Customers Facing Possible Breach Of Credit Card Data

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The California Department of Motor Vehicles was investigating a possible breach of some credit card data.

A spokesman from MasterCard says it is investigating reports of a potential breach and a DMV official says the breach does not involve MasterCard's systems.

The blog KrebsOnSecurity.com was the first to report the possible breach, which it says involved online payments from Aug. 2, 2013, to January 31, 2014. The blog is the same one who exposed the security breach of Target customers' credit card data. More than 40 million customers were affected.

The DMV was expected to issue a statement about the case Saturday.

A spokesman for the agency says MasterCard has sent out alerts to member banks and consumers have been advised to review their accounts for suspicious transactions.
