BART Budgeting $300K To Remove Art Sculpture At Embarcadero Station
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A grimy piece of artwork hanging in BART's Embarcadero Station for nearly four decades is coming down.
The 50-foot-tall, 7,000-pound macrame sculpture called "Legs" has been hanging on the east wall since 1978.
Originally white and orange in color, the knotted ropes are now barely noticeable due to being covered by dust from BART's brakes and outside pollution.
Early next week, workers will start removing the massive sculpture using detailed instructions from the artist. BART has budgeted $300,000 to break down the sculpture and deliver it to its creator, 84-year-old textile artist Barbara Shawcroft who lives in Davis.
There are no plans for BART to replace the wall with new artwork. Instead it will be left barren and used for maintenance access.
