BART Approves Funding for Additional Station In Pittsburg
PITTSBURG (KCBS) - The Pittsburg to Antioch Bay Area Rapid Transit extension now under construction will include a station at Pittsburg City Center, officials said Thursday.
The BART Board of Directors approved the final piece of the $12 million needed to build a second station in Pittsburg, about three miles east of the current terminus of the Pittsburg/Bay Point line.
A developer is looking to build 1,800 units of housing on the land adjacent to the station.
"Those 1,800 units will be identified for folks who want to get on BART. This is where they're going to move to. They're folks who won't be reliant on cars," said City Manager Joe Sobrante.
Pittsburg business and property owners took the unusual step of taxing themselves to help fund the station.
The development will also bring 900,000 square feet of new retail space to the area, part of a plan hatched in the 1990s that did not receive serious consideration until the widening of Highway 4.
The Pittsburg City Center and Antioch stations are expected to open in mid-2018.
