2 Sonoma County schools, multiple Bay Area parks close ahead of anticipated atmospheric river storm

Two schools in Sonoma County and a number of city and national parks around the Bay Area were closed on Wednesday ahead of expected heavy rainfall in the region.

The Sonoma County Office of Education confirmed in a notice the closure of Kashia School, a K-8 school near the coast, and SunRidge School in the Twin Hills Union School District in Sebastopol.

No other public school district or school in the county has announced a storm-related closure.

San Francisco Park and Rec also announced the closure of multiple facilities Wednesday morning due to the storm. The initial announcement said that Stern Grove, Pine Lake Golf Course and Gleneagles Golf Course would all be closed due to wet and windy conditions. A later update expanded the closure to all San Francisco golf courses as well as the outdoor gardens at Golden Gate Park.

The weather was also impacting Golden Gate Ferry Service. All trips to Angel Island Ferry Landing on Wednesday were canceled and service between San Francisco and Tiburon after the 11:50 a.m. departure from Tiburon are being replaced by Golden Gate Transit buses.

The National Parks Service issued an alert Tuesday afternoon, announcing that Muir Woods would be closed on Wednesday and open later Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. due to the storm. Additionally, Wednesday evening programming at Alcatraz Island has been canceled and the parking lot at Stinson Beach will be closed.

The Oakland Zoo also announced it would shut down operations Wednesday due to the storm.  

Forecasters earlier said there will be impactful weather into Wednesday night with strong gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall. Residents are advised to expect downed trees, power outages, and flooding of roadways and streams.
