Amid Drought, A's VP Billy Beane Among East Bay's Biggest Water Hogs
DANVILLE (KPIX 5) – The East Bay Municipal Utility District has revealed their biggest water hogs, and among them is Oakland A's executive Billy Beane.
According to a list the East Bay Municipal Utility District released to KPIX 5 on Thursday, the A's vice president of baseball operations is using about 6,000 gallons of water per day at his property in Danville.
The usage is six times the limit EBMUD has set, making him the district's third biggest water waster.
KPIX 5 couldn't reach Beane for comment Thursday, but a neighbor said Beane's home sits on about four acres and is surrounded by a lush lawn and gardens.
EBMUD is slapping Beane with an excessive use penalty of about $800.
"The penalty is meant to bring home that message that we're in a drought, there is a limit and really our focus is on making sure we have enough water," said EBMUD spokesperson Andrea Pook.
Topping the list of water wasters is another Danville resident, retired Chevron executive George Kirkland, using about 12,000 gallons per day.
He told the San Jose Mercury News that he had a leaky water line that needed to be fixed.
