Artists Organize Fire Extinguisher Giveaway In Wake Of Deadly 'Ghost Ship' Fire

OAKLAND (KPIX 5) -- In wake of the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland that killed 36 people, a group of artists in Oakland are helping to prevent future disasters.

On Saturday morning, they gathered along Magnolia Street and handed out free fire extinguishers and smoke detectors to those in need.

The group also offered demonstrations on how to put out a fire.

They said they want artistic communities to thrive, but also stay safe.

"There's a lot of scrutiny around these spaces right now as far as safety goes and we just want to keep our friends safe and our community safe, but also preserve these really precious spaces that foster the arts, that make our community what it is," said H.L. Nelly, an artist and musician.

By Cities Pyrotector donated about 180 fire extinguishers for the event. The group was able to give away just about all of them.
