Armed Suspect Dies In Bloody Police Encounter Near Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (CBS/AP) -- Authorities say an armed man has died in a bloody encounter with officers in Northern California.

The Sacramento Bee reports that officers responded to a call Thursday at a convenience store in the Sacramento suburb of Carmichael.

The officers found a man who was running in a store aisle with a knife and who claimed to have a gun. Sheriff's Sgt. Tony Turnbull says the man suddenly slashed himself in the neck, apparently cutting an artery.

Police fired a rubber bullet to try to incapacitate the man and then a real bullet. The man died at the scene.

Authorities say it is unclear if the police bullet hit the heavily bleeding man. Officers say they found the knife and a gun at the scene.
