Aptos Man Killed In Santa Cruz-Area Crash

SANTA CRUZ (CBS SF) -- A 44-year-old Aptos man was killed in a two-car collision near Santa Cruz on Saturday afternoon that left a woman with life-threatening injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man was driving a 1991 Ford F-150 at high speeds north on Empire Grade Road north of Llama Ranch Road shortly after 2 p.m. when he was approaching a 2001 Chevrolet van heading south, CHP officials said.

The roadway is near the north entrance to the University of California at Santa Cruz.

The man crossed over the roadway's solid double yellow lines and collided head-on with the van, which was traveling at the speed limit, according to the CHP.

He succumbed to his injuries at the scene, CHP officials said.

A 20-year-old woman was driving the van and suffered major injuries that were considered life-threatening, according to the CHP.

She was airlifted to a trauma center for treatment, CHP officials said.
