Apple Co-Founder Wozniak Worries About Computers Taking Over Humanity
CUPERTINO (CBS SF) – While he is excited about new technological advances at Apple, including a new smartwatch and a rumored driverless car, company co-founder Steve Wozniak said he is worried about artificial intelligence and the possibility of computers taking over humanity.
Wozniak addressed his concerns in an interview with the Australian Financial Review. "Computers are going to take over from humans, no question," he told the publication.
The Apple co-founder said that computers that mimicked or even attained human consciousness would be a dangerous reality.
"Like people including Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have predicted, I agree that the future is scary and very bad for people," Wozniak said, saying the robots will "get rid of the slow humans to run companies more efficiently."
Wozniak said that possibility could be avoided with the possible end of Moore's Law, which observes that computer processing speeds double every two years.
Despite his dire predictions, Wozniak said he hoped the company he co-founded would enter the field of self-driving automobiles. Last month, KPIX 5 reported on a possibly autonomous vehicle leased by Apple being tested on Bay Area streets.
Apple is reportedly pushing to begin producing such a vehicle as early as 2020. Google has been working on self-driving vehicles for years, and Tesla Motors has also expressed interest.
Wozniak said he also plans to purchase the company's smartwatch, set to be released next month.
