Pedestrian hit, killed on Highway 4 in Antioch while fleeing from police

Watch: Scene of fatal pedestrian crash on Highway 4 in Antioch

A person who was running from police in Antioch was hit and killed by a vehicle on Highway 4 in Antioch on Monday, authorities said.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said the crash happened at about 10:40 a.m. in the number one lane of eastbound Highway 4 at the Somersville Road exit.

The California Highway Patrol shut down all eastbound lanes of Highway 4 following the collision. The CHP said it received word that a pedestrian on the Highway was fleeing on foot from local law enforcement and suffered fatal injuries after being hit by a vehicle.

At 1:19 p.m., the CHP said the three right lanes of eastbound Highway 4 had been reopened.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office said Monday that the incident originated in the area of Delta Fair Boulevard, where a suspect was engaged in a disturbance at Delta Bowl. As Antioch police responded, the suspect climbed over a fence and onto eastbound lanes of Highway 4, the DA's Office said.

The car that hit the suspect, a white Toyota Camry, was being driven by a District Attorney senior inspector whose duties were unrelated to the disturbance," the DA's Office said, adding that the California Department of Justice was notified.

"The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office has yielded legal analysis to avoid a potential conflict of interest," said the office in a press statement.

The collision was also being investigated by the California Highway Patrol pursuant to the County Law Enforcement Involved Fatal Incident Protocol, the DA's Office said.
