Would-Be Antioch Carjacking Victim Arrested After He Shoots, Kills Suspect

ANTIOCH (CBS SF) -- An Antioch man has been arrested on suspicion of murder for allegedly shooting and killing a man who tried to rob him at gunpoint Friday night.

Police said Leo Lopez, 37, of Antioch, shot and killed a man during an attempted carjacking.

Officers responded at 8:31 p.m. to 20 East 18th St. on a report of shots fired in the Rite Aid parking lot.

Responding officers located Lopez, who told police he had just been the victim of a carjacking at gunpoint, and his white van had been stolen, police said.

At the same time, the police department received calls about a white van that had crashed into a parked car and came to rest in the front yard of a residence on West 17th Street, west of A Street.

Officers responded to that scene and located a 27-year-old Pittsburg man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators determined Lopez was sitting in his van and using his phone when the 27-year-old got in the van and tried to rob Lopez at gunpoint, police said.

Police said Lopez got out of the van, pulled a gun and fired several shots at his own vehicle as the suspect drove away.

Lopez was arrested and booked into the Contra Costa County Jail.
