Amtrak Train Kills Man Walking On Railroad Tracks In Fremont

FREMONT (CBS SF) -- A man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Fremont Friday evening, delaying the train and tying up traffic in the area, according to police.

A caller contacted police at 6:23 p.m. to report a person down by the railroad tracks in the area of Hansen Avenue and Blacow Road, near Thornton Avenue, according to Lt. John Harnett.

Officers found a male subject, age and identity unknown, dead at the scene.

Investigators learned from a train conductor that the man was walking east on the tracks when an eastbound Amtrak train approached, Harnett said.

The train blew its horn but the man did not get off the tracks and was struck.

The Alameda County coroner's bureau is on the scene, Harnett said.

The train was held in the area for the investigation, and traffic was backed up due to the collision. Police were advising drivers to avoid the area.
